Washington lobbyist Engel Burns is the Federal Account Director of Government Affairs at Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. As a lobbyist, Engel Burns works to advance the company’s national legislative interests in developing treatments for respiratory diseases and central nervous system disorders. Engel Burns was recently featured in the September 2011 issue of Ebony Magazine, in which he discusses his road to success and what it takes to advance legislative initiatives.
Before he began his career in government and health care, Engel Burns studied Biology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County. Since his graduation, he has worked across the country in a variety of positions such as clinical laboratory assistant, teacher, and more recently, as an entrepreneur. As Engel Burns reveals in Ebony, he believes that the combination of his experiences, energetic personality and natural charisma have played a critical role in his success as a businessman and as a powerful player in the political lobbying arena.
Throughout his life, Engel D. Burns has been committed to supporting his community. As a religious leader, he was dedicated to helping children at the Rising Sun First Baptist Church, where he organized tutoring and other programs for youth. Engel Burns also worked to secure funding for an after-school program for children in his district. He has reached out as a mentor for minority students at the University of Maryland, and has helped seniors by educating them about the process for Medicare enrollment. Currently, Engel D. Burns is a member of the Council of Corporate Advisors for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc.
